The discipline of sculpting requires a vast knowledge of drawing, painting and the intuitive ability to visualize forms three dimensionally. Add to this the physical and creative challenges of sculpting hard stone and a sculptor could take nearly a lifetime to achieve proficiency in this field.
Sopel’s artistic journey has spanned over twenty five years as a master of sculpting in the jade medium.
A prominent Canadian sculptor, Lyle Sopel was born in Richmond, British Columbia (now a suburb of Vancouver) and currently lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
His works are in numerous important private and corporate collections. Sopel's best known mediums are jade, semi-precious and precious gemstones, exotic minerals and precious metals. His larger works are frequently mixed medium compositions with an allegoric, metaphoric, mythological or spiritual theme.
These tableaus frequently tell their stories with multiple carvings of animals, fish, birds, flowers and objects (see the AskART photo of the artist). The individual subjects of his other works are Buddhas, animals (especially bears, birds and fish), nudes and other figurines.
